Instrumental and Choral Conducting (Graduate)
Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting applicants must:
- Submit a Prescreening Video(VHS or DVD), Part 1 of the University application, and the application fee by December 1. Please label video with the applicant's full name, either "Prescreening Band Conducting" or "Prescreening Orchestral Conducting" along with a written log indicating the title and timing for each excerpt included on the tape. A limited number of applicants will be invited to audition.
- Orchestal Conducting applicants: tape should be approximately 15 minutes, comprised of excerpts from contrasting repertoire that demonstrates a variety of styles and tempi. The camera should be placed at the back of the ensemble with the focus on the front of the conductor. A full-size ensemble is not required; for example, a string quintet plus piano will suffice.
- Submit a repertory list with the Prescreening Video or DVD
- Submit programs of concerts in which the applicant has appeared as conductor or performer
- Orchestral Conducting applicants who are invited to campus will be contacted shortly after December 15 to arrange an audition on one of the following dates: January 20, February 8, February 10, or February 15.
Instrumental Conducting Applicants: who are invitied to campus will be contacted to arrange an on-campus audition date.
- Interviews and additional testing at the live auditions will be required for acceptance
Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting applicants must:
- Submit a Prescreening Video or DVD, Part 1 of the University application, and the application fee by December 1. Please label video or DVD with your full name and "Prescreening Choral" A limited number of applicants will be invited to audition. A limited number of applicants will be invited to audition. Invited applicants will be contacted soon after January 1 to arrange an on-campus audition for January 20, February 3, or February 10.
- MM candidates must submit a 10-minute video cassette recording of a choral performance or rehearsal under the applicant's direction
- DMA candidates must submit a 15-minute video cassette recording of a recent choral rehearsal or performance (with the option of a CD/DVD recording of a recent choral performance).
- Diagnostic test administered at the time of audition (DMA only)
All Choral Conducting applicants must submit the following with the Prescreening Video:
- Repertory list of conducted choral works and solo vocal literature performed
- Programs of concerts in which the applicant has appeared as conductor or performer
