M.M. applicants should prepare one complete solo work, which may include: Beethoven (Sonata), Mozart (concerti), R. Strauss (concerti), Hindemith (sonatas or Concerto), Dukas (Villanelle), Heiden (Sonata), Schumann (Adagio & Allegro), or a comparable solo of the applicant's choice. In addition, applicants should prepare six orchestral excerpts from the standard repertory, including: Brahms (Symphony No. 3, third movement - first horn), Shostakovitch (Symphony No. 5, low tutti passage - first movement, figure 17-21), Mahler (Symphony No. 5, Scherzo, bars 563-579 and 699-744, obligato first horn), R. Strauss (Till Eulenspiegel, opening calls), Tchaikovsky (Symphony No. 5, second movement, solo), and one excerpt of candidate's choice.
All D.M.A. applicants should prepare two works from different periods of contrasting style, which may include: Michael Haydn (Concerto), Foerster (concerti), Joseph Haydn (concerti), W.A. Mozart (Concerto No. 2 or Concerto No. 4), Weber (Concertino), Schumann (Adagio & Allegro), R. Strauss (Concerto No. 2), Gliere (Concerto), Schoeck (Concerto), Wilder (sonatas), Jacobs (Concerto), or a comparable solo of the applicant's choice. In addition, applicants should prepare six orchestral excerpts from the standard repertory, including: Beethoven (Symphony No. 7, first movement, Vivace section before C and last 19 bars of that movement), Brahms (Symphony No. 2, first horn, first movement: 8th bar after M until 31 after M, first horn solo), Shostakovitch (Symphony No. 5, low tutti passage - first movement, figure 17-21), Mahler (Symphony No. 5, Scherzo, bars 563-579 and 699-744, obligato first horn), R. Strauss (Ein Heldenleben, opening call, first horn), R. Strauss (Don Quixote, Variation #7, fourth horn), Wagner (Short Call), and one excerpt of the candidate's choice.
Sight reading may be required for all graduate applicants.
Applicants for the M.M. and D.M.A. degrees must perform:

D.M.A. in Tenor Trombone.
M.M. in Bass Trombone.
D.M.A. in Bass Trombone.
