Winds
UIUC woodwind players are immersed in the art of music, training to be more than technicians on their instruments. They breathe life into solo repertoire in studio classes and recitals and in master classes coached by internationally recognized guest performers. Their UIUC artist-teachers are doers—heard on CDs (Timothy McGovern has made some 30 of them), in orchestras (David Harris has played with the Cleveland Orchestra; Scott Hostetler with the Chicago Symphony), and at conferences and international competitions (Debra Richmeyer, a soloist at six World Saxophone Conferences, won a medal in 1978 and has since helped numerous students become winners). The faculty is here to help develop excellent players prepared to do it all—well, almost all: depends if you’re as organized in your busy lives as the faculty are in theirs. With two student and two professional orchestras on campus, six concert bands, three jazz bands, contemporary music groups, and a variety of small ensembles, you’ll participate to the max—and learn to get at the music’s core expression.
